Sensex, Nifty trade flat as investors stay cautious ahead of US-India tariff deadline
Markets remained range-bound in afternoon trading on Monday, with benchmark indices trading marginally lower as investors maintained a cautious stance ahead of the July 9 US-India tariff deadline. The Sensex was down 40.54 points, or 0.05 per cent at 83,392.35, while the Nifty declined 9.95 points or 0.04 per cent to 25,451.05 at 12.30 pm.
The flat trading session reflected continued uncertainty over potential trade implications, and market sentiment remained subdued following morning weakness. Markets had opened marginally lower, with the Sensex beginning the day at 83,398.08 against the previous close of 83,432.89, while the Nifty opened at 25,450.45 compared to Friday’s close of 25,461.00.
Hindustan Unilever emerged as the top gainer on the Nifty 50, surging 3.12 per cent to 2,412.30, followed by Jio Financial Services which gained 1.28 per cent to 329.10. Tata Consumer Products advanced 1.21 per cent to 1,102.90, while Eicher Motors rose 1.08 per cent to 5,690.00. ITC rounded out the top gainers with a 0.99 per cent increase to 416.65.
On the downside, Bharat Electronics Limited led the losers, declining 1.80 per cent to 419.85. Tech Mahindra fell 1.79 per cent to 1,625.50, while Eternal India dropped 1.72 per cent to 256.90. UltraTech Cement slipped 1.26 per cent to 12,349.00, and Hindalco declined 1.16 per cent to 691.35.
Market breadth remained negative across the broader market, with 2,298 stocks declining against 1,601 advances on the BSE. Of the 4,105 stocks traded, 206 remained unchanged. The session saw 130 stocks hitting 52-week highs, while 49 touched 52-week lows. Circuit activity was balanced with 229 stocks in the upper circuit and 224 in the lower circuit.
Sectoral indices showed mixed performance during the session. The Nifty Next 50 gained 74.15 points or 0.11 per cent, to 68,681.95, while the Nifty Financial Services index fell 38.55 points or 0.14 per cent to 26,827.75. The Nifty Bank index declined 64.50 points, or 0.11 per cent to 56,967.40, and the Nifty Midcap 100 dropped 118.95 points or 0.20 per cent to 59,558.80.
Trading volumes remained subdued as investors await clarity on trade developments and key corporate earnings scheduled for the week. The market’s lackluster performance continued the cautious trend established in morning trading, with participants preferring to stay on the sidelines until more definitive news emerges on trade negotiations.
