NSE, BSE, Top gainers & losers today 16th May: Sensex, Nifty 50 trade lower, IT stocks drag, defence index up 6%, Cochin Shipyard, Crompton, Kaynes, Page Industries, Pokarna, RVNL, Mazagon shares in action
Shares of Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises, NTPC, Bajaj Auto and Eicher Motors topped the list of Nifty 50 gainers, while Bharti Airtel, IndusInd, HCL Tech, Shriram Finance and Grasim Industries depreciated.
Following the sharp rally on Thursday, equity benchmark indices traded lower on Friday mid-trading session amid mixed global cues. Defence stocks continued upward momentum amid the geopolitical situation between India and Pakistan. US President Donald Trump had stated that India offered a trade deal with zero tariffs.
Sensex fell 331.11 pts or 0.40 per cent to 82,199.63 as at 12.26 pm, and Nifty 40 declined 81.40 pts or 0.32 per cent to 24,980.70. Volatility index depreciated 2.11 per cent to 16.54.
Smallcap stocks gained close to 1 per cent, while midcap stocks traded with marginal gains.
On the sectoral front, IT index dragged the market. Realty index was up 1 per cent. FMCG, auto and oil & gas indexes showed resilience.
Nifty Defence index soared nearly 6 per cent, Mazagon Dock, Paras Defence, Data Patterns, BEML lead the rally with 7-9 per cent uptick.
About 2,759 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange, of which 1,833 advanced and 839 declined. Nearly 128 stocks hit the upper circuit, including Gensol Engineering and Pokarna. 21 stocks traded at lower circuit.
Top gainers & losers intraday
Bharat Electronics stock led the gainers of Nifty 50 components, trading 4.45 per cent higher at ₹366. The defence PSU is set to announce Q4 results on Monday, May 19.
Other stocks Adani Enterprises, NTPC, Bajaj Auto and Eicher Motors delivered marginal gains at the time of writing.
On the flip side, Bharti Airtel shares fell 2.54 per cent to ₹1,819.70 as Singapore Telecommunications sold around 1.2 per cent of its direct stake in the company for $2 billion.
IndusInd Bank stock traded 2.34 per cent lower on the NSE at ₹762.20, after hitting intraday low of ₹750. The bank had disclosed that a cumulative amount of ₹674 crore was incorrectly recorded as interest over three quarters of FY25 in its microfinance institution (MFI) business and that there were unsubstantiated balances aggregating to ₹595 crore in its “other assets” accounts. Brokerages have downgraded the stock.
HCL Technologies depreciated 2.15 per cent to ₹1,659.50, amid selling pressure in IT stocks. Infosys, Tech Mahindra, TCS and Wipro also traded in the negative territory.
Shriram Finance and Grasim Industries stock also declined close to 2 per cent.
Shares of JWL, Angel One, Anant Raj, Ircon and Crompton rallied 7-9 per cent among smallcap, while RVNL, Mazagon, SJVN, Premier Energies and IREDA surged 5-10 per cent among midcap.
Bannari Amman Sugars, Dalmia Bharat, Divi’s Laboratories, Bharat Dynamics, Bharat Electronics, and ICICI Bank were among the 48 stocks that hit 52-week high.
On the BSE, Titagarh, Cochin Shipyard, GRSE, RITES and RVNL rallied 10-13 per cent. Paradeep Phosphates, Neuland Laboratories and NOCIL plunged 6-7 per cent.
