Airtel expands global network with SEA-ME-WE-6 cable landing in Chennai

Bharti Airtel, India’s major telecom provider, today completed the landing of the SEA-ME-WE-6 submarine cable in Chennai, following its earlier landing in Mumbai last December. The 21,700 Rkm cable system, engineered by SubCom, connects India to Singapore and France through Egypt.

The shares of Bharti Airtel Limited were trading at ₹1,691.75 down by ₹25.30 or 1.47 per cent on the NSE today at 12.40 pm.

The new cable system will add 220 TBPs of global capacity to India’s digital infrastructure. The landings will be integrated with Airtel’s data center subsidiary, Nxtra, in both Mumbai and Chennai, enhancing services for global hyperscalers and businesses requiring international connectivity.

As a key consortium member, Airtel has invested in the core cable and co-built a private network of four Fiber Pairs between Singapore, Chennai, and Mumbai. This addition expands Airtel’s global network presence, which now spans five continents with investments in 34 submarine cables.

The development strengthens Airtel’s existing network of 400,000 Rkms across 50 countries. Recent cable investments by the company include 2Africa, Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2, and Equiano, connecting India to key regions including APAC, Europe, the Middle East, and the US.
